A Revolutionary Approach in Periodontics
In the ever-evolving field of dentistry, advancements continue to emerge, offering innovative solutions to enhance patient care. One such groundbreaking technique making waves in periodontics is perioscopy. The Mugford Center for Periodontics and Dental Implants stands at the forefront of adopting and implementing this revolutionary approach, ushering in a new era of precision and effectiveness in the treatment of periodontal diseases.
An Overview of Perioscopy
Perioscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technique that allows periodontists to visualize and treat the internal aspects of periodontal pockets with unparalleled clarity. Traditionally, diagnosing and treating periodontal diseases involved relying on visual assessments, X-rays, and probing, which may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the root cause. Perioscopy changes the game by providing a direct, magnified view of the subgingival environment.
At The Mugford Center, the perioscopy procedure involves inserting a miniature dental endoscope into the periodontal pocket. This endoscope is equipped with a tiny camera and fiber-optic light source, enabling real-time visualization of the pocket’s interior.
The perioscope is attached to an instrument that is gently placed beneath the gumline, or in the spaces between the teeth and gums, called periodontal pockets. Once in place, the periscope gives periodontists a 45X magnified and illuminated view of the root surfaces and gum tissues, which can be viewed on a large computer screen. This high-definition imagery allows for precise identification of calculus, inflamed tissue, and other factors contributing to periodontal disease.
“The endoscope allows us the opportunity to actually see the surface of the root below the gum line, while the tooth is being cleaned,” says Dr. David Mugford. “We are able to go in with no incisions and clean out underneath the gum and selectively remove diseased gum tissue. This technology also allows the visualization and magnification of other tooth abnormalities such as decay, enamel projections or fractures that have occurred under the gum line.”
The Many Benefits of Perioscopy
Enhanced Diagnostic Accuracy — Perioscopy enables a detailed examination of subgingival structures, leading to a more accurate diagnosis. Identifying hidden calculus and inflammatory tissues allows for targeted treatment planning.
Minimally Invasive — Unlike traditional periodontal surgeries that may involve extensive tissue manipulation, perioscopy is a minimally invasive procedure. This reduces patient discomfort, promotes faster healing, and preserves healthy gum tissue.
Precision in Treatment — With direct visualization, periodontists at The Mugford Center can precisely remove calculus and diseased tissue, promoting optimal healing and minimizing the risk of reinfection. “We are able to selectively remove bad tissue without harming healthy tissue,” adds Dr. Mugford.
Patient Education — Perioscopy allows patients to see the condition of their gums firsthand. This visual component enhances patient understanding and involvement in their treatment plan, fostering a collaborative approach to oral health.
Improved Outcomes — The combination of accurate diagnosis and precise treatment results in improved outcomes for patients and faster recovery after undergoing perioscopy. Long-term success in managing periodontal diseases is a primary goal at The Mugford Center.
