This unique treatment provides you with a modern-day alternative to traditional bridges and dentures and boasts a 98% success rate. The key to the success of dental implants is the fusion of your jawbone to the implant posts, a process called osseointegration. At The Mugford Center, we can help to make sure that this process occurs properly to help ensure strong, stable dental restorations.

Osseointegration and Dental Implants

Osseointegration is integral to the success of your dental implants. This process stabilizes the implant posts in your jaw, a process that essentially turns the posts into replacement roots that are then able to provide secure support for your dental restorations.

An important factor in proper osseointegration is sufficient bone mass in your jaw. Following tooth loss, however, your jawbone begins to lose bone mass. When you have lost too much bone mass, your jawbone may not be able to fuse to your implant posts properly, or at all. This can result in loose implants and unstable restorations. You may even experience complete implant failure.

Osseointegration and Healing

Osseointegration occurs as you heal from dental implant surgery. It does not occur all at once. Instead, it occurs gradually over the course of several months. Your jawbone slowly fuses to the posts, integrating them into your jawbone so that they can provide the stability that your replacement teeth and allow them to function just like the rest of your natural teeth.

For osseointegration to happen properly, it is important that you take good care of your mouth while you heal. Avoid smoking and drinking, habits that can slow healing and increase your risk for infections. Brush and floss your teeth regularly. It is also important that you attend your scheduled follow up visits. During these visits, we monitor your healing and make sure that there are no complications.

Biocompatible Materials

Most of the dental implants placed today are made from titanium oxide. This material consists of titanium mixed with other materials, which makes it incredibly strong and practically indestructible. However, some patients are allergic to certain metals in these implants, while others are uncomfortable with the use of metals. Zirconia implants, or ceramic implants, have been developed as an alternative. This material, while considered metal-free, does contain trace metals that are necessary for strength and stability. Both of these materials are considered to be biocompatible. This means that they are generally well tolerated by your jawbone and your gum tissue. Your bone will fuse to them, and your gum tissues will heal around them, incorporating them into your mouth to provide you with strong, stable, restorations for your missing teeth.

The Benefits of Proper Osseointegration

When osseointegration occurs properly, it provides you with significant benefits.
•  The greatest benefit of successful osseointegration is that the posts become stable, secure replacement roots that allow your dental restorations to function exactly like the rest of your real teeth.
•  In addition to holding your dental restorations securely in place, the posts also work to restore stimulation to your jawbone.
•  This stimulation helps to stop and prevent bone loss in your jaw, keeping your jaw strong and healthy.
