Reasons to Get a Gum Biopsy

Posted on 8/23/2021 by David Mugford
Reasons to Get a Gum BiopsyA gum biopsy is a type of surgery in which gum tissue is removed and examined. A gum biopsy is used to look for the cause of any abnormal gum tissue in the mouth and is only done when there is something abnormal about gum tissue. Results may indicate various concerns that may require further treatment and otherwise may not have been diagnosed.

Signs You May Need a Biopsy

Symptoms of abnormality in the gums can vary. Ultimately, if you are experiencing discomfort for long periods of time or visibly see different abnormalities, it is worth scheduling an appointment with our periodontists. Signs of abnormal gums may consist of white, red, or dark patches on the gums. Other symptoms include bleeding gums, cracks on the gumline, and thickened gum tissue. Furthermore, we may recommend a gum biopsy if we see a lesion or tumor in your mouth during a routine dental exam.

What is a Gum Biopsy?

A gum biopsy is a diagnostic tool that allows a pathologist to test infected or abnormal tissue. If a biopsy reveals cancer, it can also help determine what stage and extent of the cancer involved, making it more feasible to identify the most appropriate treatment. Sometimes local anesthesia during a gum biopsy to limit discomfort during the procedure. A biopsy consists of removing a sample from the gums and sometimes the jaw or tooth.

A gum biopsy can identify dangerous cancers and other abnormalities that need immediate treatment. Without a gum biopsy, these conditions can go undiagnosed and lead to much more severe issues for both the mouth and the body. If you have questions about the health of your gums or think you may need a gum biopsy, please don't hesitate to call our periodontists so we can help.
