Can You Get Dental Implants If Your Jaw Has Begun to Resorb?
Posted on 5/10/2021 by David Mugford
You can get dental implants if your jaw has begun to resorb, or the bone is beginning to soften and “melt” away. To treat this problem, we will need to perform a bone graft.
What Is a Bone Graft?
A bone graft is often prescribed for periodontal patients who have lost some bone because of periodontal disease. Bone grafting materials are designed to treat the jaw bone by strengthening it and by adding volume. Once a bone graft has been performed, the bone will gradually regrow so implants can be placed.
Treating Periodontal Disease
If you have periodontal disease, we will also need to treat the disease by administering antibiotics and performing procedures, for example, such as scaling and root planing (SRP). If the disease is advanced, we will need to schedule surgical interventions, such as pocket reduction surgery, also known as gum flap surgery. While SRP is less invasive, gum flap surgery is prescribed if the SRP procedure cannot be used to treat some deeper gum pockets. The idea of either procedure is to remove the tartar that is causing the infection and to smooth out the roots of teeth so they do not accumulate plaque as easily. Both these processes are necessary to prevent further bone less and infections.
Getting Dental Implants Is Possible – You Just Need to Prepare
You can get dental implants as long as you take care of problems with bone resorption and its underlying causes. By scheduling a comprehensive periodontal evaluation (CPE), we can check the severity of your gum disease and plan an appropriate course of treatment.
