Periodontal Disease in ChildrenPeriodontal disease can occur in children. It is an infection whereby the gums and supporting tissue of the teeth gets destroyed. It is more commonly referred to as gum disease.

Periodontal disease is caused in children primarily due to buildup of plaque. Plaque is dangerous as it contains bacteria that stick to the surface of the teeth. This plaque is usually hard to remove and over time, it hardens. This substance is known as calculus tartar. Plaque buildup among children is usually a result of poor oral hygiene.

Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease in Children


Certain factors make children more susceptible to gum disease. These include:

•  Genetics
•  Remains of food stuck in the gums
•  Poor diet
•  Smoking at an early age
•  Breathing through the mouth
•  Autoimmune diseases
•  Clenching or grinding of teeth
•  Hormonal changes during puberty

How to Diagnose Periodontal Disease in Children?



Red or swollen gums, bad breath and bleeding while brushing are common symptoms of gum disease but it can be effectively diagnosed only with the help of a professional. Dr. Mugford will examine your child's teeth and gums and conduct an X-ray to determine whether your child is suffering from gum disease.

How to Prevent Periodontal Disease in Children?


There are several ways you can help your child evade the hassle and pain of periodontal disease. This can be done through:
•  Good oral hygiene-your child will need to brush his or her teeth and practice flossing
•  Deep cleaning to remove any plaque from the teeth and gums
•  Oral medicine prescribed by a professional
•  Surgery if the periodontal disease has exacerbated
