What People Are Most Likely To Get Gum Disease?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by David Mugford
What People Are Most Likely To Get Gum Disease?Periodontal disease is a fairly common oral pathology, but as in many cases, statistically some people are more likely than others to acquire it. If you think you belong to one of these groups, then it is especially important take good care of your oral health.

If You Smoke, You Increase Your Risk Of Getting Gum Disease

Regular cigarette smokers are known to be three times more prone to periodontitis than non-smokers. The reason for this is both due to the accumulation of bacteria and the decrease in the effectiveness of the immune system. For the best come, it is advised that you do not smoke.

Chronic Stress Is A Risk Factor for Gum Disease

If you are under a lot of stress, then you may secrete large amounts of cortisol, which promotes and accentuates the inflammatory responses of your body. Therefore, this response can be triggered at the level of the gums and develop or worsen periodontal disease.

Do Not Neglect Your Oral Health If You Are In Your Menopause

When women enter their menopausal period, their estrogen levels drop, which greatly affects the strength of their bones. This includes those of dental support. In addition, it reduces the amount of saliva and therefore the gums are more prone to irritation and the effects of bacteria. Any signs of gingivitis in ages close to menopause are worthy of warning and prevention.

Pregnancy and Periodontitis

In pregnancy there is an elevated level of prostaglandins that are the main inflammatory mediator for the development of periodontal disease. During those 9 months, the woman should be especially careful with the health of her gums and preferably go to our professionals for optimal control.

Of course, anyone can be susceptible to gum disease. Do not wait until it is too late to treat yours. To learn more about how to protect your smile, please consult our professionals for an appointment today.
