What to Do if You Notice Your Dentures Have an Odor
Posted on 9/21/2020 by David Mugford
If you have dentures, you want them to become a normal part of your mouth, and you want other people to think they are as natural as possible. If you are missing teeth, dentures are amazing. However, one of the downsides to oral health in general is halitosis or bad breath. You may have thought that your dentures meant that you were free from bad breath. However, just because you have dentures doesn't mean you are immune.
Why Your Dentures Might Smell
Whether you have dentures or not, your mouth is full of bacteria. Bacteria can grow on your dentures, as well as your tongue and gums. It is the bacteria that gives you bad breath. Also, bacteria tend to reproduce if your mouth feels dry. You may have a naturally dry mouth due to medications, such as allergy and asthma medications. You may also have less saliva in your mouth because of your dentures. If you have bad breath and you wear dentures, what can you do?
What to Do
First, you need to clean your dentures every day. You need to be sure and clean your dentures with a denture brush at night. Then you need to soak your dentures in a denture disinfecting solution. While you're cleaning your dentures, you need to brush your gums, cheeks and gums with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste.
Also, be sure that after each meal, you rinse your dentures. You should use an anti-bacterial mouthwash after meals. It will help get rid of the food particles and excess bacteria. You should make sure that you make and keep your dental appointments. That way, we can double check and make sure your dentures are fitting properly and that there aren't any cracks in your dentures. If your dentures are cracked, not only are they uncomfortable to wear, but they also could allow bacteria to settle in the cracks.
If you follow these simple steps, you will wow everyone with your fresh breath and amazing smile. Contact our office today to learn more!
