The Impact Lasers Have on Gum Health

Posted on 6/22/2020 by David Mugford
The Impact Lasers Have on Gum HealthMedical science keeps finding new technology to help people stay as healthy as possible. Lasers are one of the new technologies that medical professionals are finding uses for. The lasers are versatile and can help in many areas of the body. Dental professionals are using lasers to help them with some procedures. The lasers help in many ways and offer several benefits when it comes to gum health.

Lasers and Gum Disease

Gum disease left untreated can damage the teeth, gums and bones. It is a serious condition, but it is treatable. The earlier you recognize gum disease, the easier it is for a successful course of treatment. Gum disease is a result of a buildup of bacteria that eventually becomes plaque and tartar. The most common treatment is to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar to allow the gums to restore to health. That is where the lasers come in.
If gum disease has started, it is because bacteria was not cleaned from the teeth and gums. Pockets and gaps develop which gives the bacteria time to grow. It is not always possible to reach the bacterial growth through brushing and flossing. Even the professional cleaning may not reach the buildup of bacteria. Lasers can help with the deep cleaning needed to remove the bacteria completely.

What Lasers Do

The lasers produce a narrow beam of light that has a specific frequency. It is possible for this intense stream of light to detect both healthy and diseased gum tissue. This allows it to target only the diseased tissue without damaging the surrounding tissue. It helps speed up the healing process. It is also possible to not only remove the bacteria, but to actually kill the bacteria and sterilize the tissue. All of this provides better results when treating gum disease.
It is always important to find the best way to treat any dental problems. Laser are just another great tool we have to help people achieve good oral health. For more information about how we use technology, contact the dental professionals at our office today.
