There are many foods and drinks that can damage your teeth and gums, and today we're going to explore some that make things worse, and some that can make things better for your oral health.
Out With The Bad The average adult consumes up to 22 grams of sugar per day! This is twice what the recommended amount is, and all of that sugar has to pass through your mouth to get into your body. The most common way that we consume sugars is through what we drink.
Fruit juices are tricky because they may seem like a healthy alternative to a soda or sports drink, but fruit juices often times have more sugar than sodas do! A single serving of apple juice can have up to 10 grams of sugar, this combined with the citric acid in fruit juice can easily lead to decay and gum disease.
Sodas and sports drinks are also to be avoided. Sports drinks, while they do have electrolytes in them, have more sugar per serving than the leading brand of soda. They also have high levels of sodium and those two things combined will destroy your enamel and can lead to gum disease. Please, avoid sodas and sports drinks when at all possible.
In With The Good The best things you can drink to improve your oral health are water, milk and green teas. Water is of course what our bodies crave most of all. Check to see if your local water is fluoridated, as this is best. Milk is rich in calcium and helps build strong teeth. Green tea helps reduce inflammation that is often associated with gum disease.
