![]() Because periodontal disease affects the gums and bone that supports the teeth, it is extremely important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible. Gum Disease DiagnosisWhen you have your gums checked during an oral examination, you will have your gums measured with a periodontal probe that will calculate how deep the pockets around all your teeth are. This process is usually done each time you come in for a visit. When your gums are healthy the pockets will be between one and three millimeters deep.Symptoms of Bad BreathSome symptoms are more obvious than others, but if you have any of these signs, you could be suffering from gum disease:
Gum Disease TreatmentIf gum disease is caught early it can be successfully treated with what's called scaling and root planing, where each tooth is carefully cleaned, and plaque is removed from deep inside the periodontal pockets. After the process is completed, usually in two visits - one for each side of the mouth - you will get checked out regularly to monitor the gums closely. There is also a tray delivery system, where a custom-fit tray is made after getting impressions of your teeth, for use at home. The trays are filled with medications that you apply to your gums daily, like those use to deliver fluoride treatments.
