What to Do When You First Notice Swollen Gums

Posted on 9/20/2018 by David Mugford
What to Do When You First Notice Swollen GumsWhen you first notice swollen gums, you do not need to panic. Your gums can become swollen for a number of reasons and as such, not all of them point to an infection.

First, think about what you have just eaten or drank. Is it possible that something you had irritated your mouth and caused some swelling in your gums? Brittle food, such as chips, can rub against your gums while you eat them and cause inflammation.

Also, if you have recently flossed your teeth, it is natural for them to become somewhat inflamed due to the agitation. As you can see, not ever instance of swollen gums is something to be worried about, however, id the swelling doesn't subside within a reasonable amount of time, then you should contact our office immediately.

Seek Professional Advice

If your gums continue to be swollen for more than a day or are chronically swollen and keep coming back even after you do not do anything to irritate the inside of the mouth, then it is time to come see us.

It could be something as simple as using an ineffective brushing technique or reaction to a specific product, to something more serious, such as gum disease. The only way to know for sure is to come in for an exam.

As mentioned, brushing and flossing will help your teeth and gums remain healthy and strong. If you've been neglecting proper oral hygiene practices, this could be the problem. Return to brushing and flossing as normal and if you do not see a reduction in gum inflammation within about 24 hours, then contact our office and schedule an appointment.

You should not let chronic inflammation go for too long, as this can not only become painful, but it might something that can easily be fixed. It's easier to take care of any oral problems at the onset of symptoms than it is it the problem is allowed to progress. If you are not sure about the situation surrounding your swollen gums, come into our office today. It's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your oral health.
