The Mugford Center Covid-19 Update

At The Mugford Center we prioritize the safety of our patients and employees. We have always taken extra precautions to provide our patients with a clean and sterile environment. In these times we make sure to go above and beyond what the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the American Dental Association, and the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners recommends. Our goal is to make everyone who comes into our office feel as comfortable as they possibly can.

Early Signs of Dental Implant Failure

Posted on 7/20/2018 by David Mugford
Early Signs of Dental Implant FailureGetting a dental implant is a big step forward. Many of our patients tell us that their dental implants have changed their lives, restoring not only the appearance of their smiles but the functionality of a full set of teeth.

However, over the years, some dental implants may begin to fail. If this happens, there are a few things you can look for as early warning signs. By recognizing these signs, you are better equipped to deal with the issue and take corrective steps before the implants fail completely.

Loosening of the Implants

One of the most obvious signs that an implant may be close to failing is when it begins to loosen. Whether it's a single implant or a bridge, if the dental work begins to wiggle when you apply pressure, this could be a sign that it will soon fail.

Swelling of the Surrounding Gum Tissue

Even if the implant is not moving, you should take note of any sudden cases of swollen or inflamed gum tissue. This is particularly so if the affected tissue is close to the implant. Even if you are experiencing no pain, if you notice that your gum tissue doesn't look right, you should come see us right away. We will take a look at the implant and let you know what, if anything, you should do.

Pain or Discomfort

If you are beginning to feel pain in the area where the implant is located, that may mean that it is failing. This is so even if the other warning signs are not present. Everyone reacts to the failure of an implant differently, and you should not take the absence of one of these signs as evidence that the implant is not failing—especially if you are experiencing any of the other signs of implant failure.

If you have any questions, give us a call. We're here to help.
