What Your Gums Say About the Health of Your Heart

Posted on 5/13/2018 by David Mugford
Oral Infection The Mugford Center MD 21114Is your gum putting you at risk of a heart attack or stroke? This discussion has been ongoing for years, and finally, doctors think that there is a link between oral health and a healthy heart. But what is the connection yet the two are seemingly miles apart?

The link is the number of bacteria in the mouth as well as that of veins in the gum.

How Infection Spreads

The gums have several small blood vessels while the mouth is full of both good and bad bacteria to aid in food processing. When the gum is punctured, even a little, bacteria could get into the blood and be carried straight to the heart. This is the sole reason why we advocate for the brushing and flossing of teeth at least twice a day.

When bacteria enter the bloodstream, they are practically unstoppable owing to their numbers. They then cause inflammation, which is the primary cause of stroke and other terminal illnesses.

Experts confirm that the strain of bacteria found in periodontal diseases, Streptococcus Sanguis, is likely to affect the heart and cause stroke. Unfortunately, the more bacteria you have in your system, the harder the heart will need to work.

How Do You Protect Yourself?

If you already have a gum infection, you will need to see a dentist as soon as possible. Antibiotics without the dentist's direction will not help much. Overall better dental hygiene will change the game for you. We always advise that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, paying particular attention to the gum.

Floss before you brush your teeth to dislodge any food particles. If you haven't been seeing a dentist at least twice a year, you are exposing yourself to unnecessary health risks. Plan a consultation with us so that we can start you off right.
