At The Mugford Center we prioritize the safety of our patients and employees. We have always taken extra precautions to provide our patients with a clean and sterile environment. In these times we make sure to go above and beyond what the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the American Dental Association, and the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners recommends. Our goal is to make everyone who comes into our office feel as comfortable as they possibly can.

How Gum Disease Goes Unnoticed for So Long

Posted on 3/20/2018 by David Mugford
Gum Disease The Mugford Center MD 21114-2033Why does gum disease go unnoticed? Why do people wait until it's too late to do anything about it? Fear and the lack of self-confidence are some of the most common reasons why people wait so long to see the dentist.

Going to the dentist is scary to some, but, to better our health and our teeth, we need to set those fears and insecurities behind us and just push through the worry. We have so many new options now to where we can get the work we need done on our teeth and not go through these unwanted problems. One such option is called sedation density.

Reasons Gum Disease Tends to Get Bad Before Getting Treated

The biggest reason gum disease gets so bad is because people wait to see their dentist. One reason why we wait too long to visit the office is because some people don't have the money or the insurance won't cover the cost of the work that needs to be done on our teeth. It's also because people don't want to brush their teeth.

By the time they start brushing their teeth, it's often too late to do anything about it from simple brushing. People need to know how bad gum disease really is and they need to be fully aware that their health is at risk. Another reason is the use of tobacco products, smoking and chewing is really bad for your teeth, and your whole mouth in general.

Since the symptoms of gum disease are painless, we're going to include some here. If you have any of these symptoms, we urge you to come and see us or call us right away so we can get control of this disease. If it is not under control and goes untreated, it will become irreversible. However, if we catch it in time, we can help you subside the infection, and often, reverse the effects.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

There are many symptoms that go along with gum disease. They can include things like:

•  Bleeding from the gums while brushing or flossing.
•  Lingering bad breath or bad taste in mouth.
•  Severe sensitivity to hot or cold substances.
•  White or yellow pus around the gums or teeth.
•  Redness, swollen or tender gums.
•  Pocketing around the gum line.

We can't stress this enough! Please come see us or call our office if you notice any of these symptoms or have any questions or concerns.
