Gum Health Goes Downhill When You Drink Alcohol

As you age, so does the mouth and specifically your gum and teeth. Most people will lose their teeth, while a few will retain theirs to the ripe age of 90 (or longer).

Well, while you can't prevent aging and tooth loss, you can keep it at bay for as long as possible by adopting proper dental hygiene and avoiding vices that expose them to dental disease.

The Truth about Alcohol

The fact that your favorite brand of mouthwash contains alcohol does not mean that it is good for your teeth. The fact is that alcohol contains sugar that we all know to be harmful. Additionally, it has drying agents that will erode the protective layer built by saliva, exposing your teeth to bacterial infection.

The sugars in your favorite alcoholic drink (including beer) promote the erosion of enamel, leaving your teeth exposed and vulnerable. Brushing may do a bit of damage control, but you are still at risk of exposing yourself to more severe dental concerns that will manifest as you age.

Another thing that could happen is the inflammation of the gum when exposed to alcohol repeatedly. Inflammation leads to severe consequences such as heart disease as a result of clogged arteries that have been exposed to bacteria.

What Should You Do?
If you cannot quit alcohol, then you should moderate the rate at which you drink. Also, you want to be vigilant with your brushing and flossing and overall dental hygiene. Try to brush your teeth after a drinking spree or at least the following day if the task is too much in that state. Whatever you do, do not give plague the chance to build up.

Before the problem escalates, book an appointment and let us help you reclaim your dental health. It could save your life.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (410) 260-0790 today.
