Why You May Need a Soft Tissue Graft

A soft tissue graft is a surgical procedure that takes tissue from one part of your mouth and attaches it to your gum tissue to cover over areas of your teeth where gum recession has occurred. There are a few reasons why you might need this type of graft.

Types of Soft Tissue Graft

There are three main types of soft tissue grafts (also known as a gum graft):

•  Connective-tissue grafts require an incision on the roof of your mouth, creating a flap. Tissue is removed from under the flap and stitched to your gums.
•  Free gingival grafts are similar to connective-tissue grafts, except the tissue is taken directly from the roof of your mouth.
•  Pedicle grafts use surrounding gum tissue. Incisions are made and the tissue is rearranged to cover your exposed teeth.

Connective-tissue grafts are the most commonly used, and the healing is less painful. Your dentist will help you to determine which is the best option for your needs.

Teeth Sensitivity

As your gums recede, the roots of your teeth become exposed, which can lead to temperature sensitivity. For many, this makes eating certain foods difficult to eat. Soft tissue grafts cover the exposed roots, protecting them from these issues.

Your smile is usually the first thing people notice about you. When your gums recede, it can throw off your smile and may even make you look older than you really are. Soft tissue grafts restore a normal gum line and give you back your beautiful smile.

Reverse Gum Disease

Gum disease is a serious oral health condition, and it is often the cause of gum recession in the first place. Left untreated, your teeth become loose and can even fall out. Soft tissue grafts after gum disease treatment protect your teeth and gums from bacterial assault. As the graft heals, the tissue forms securely around your teeth, sealing out destructive bacteria, helping to keep your mouth healthy.

Gum recession can cause a lot of oral health issues. Soft tissue grafts are meant to reverse these problems and give you back your gorgeous, healthy smile.

Please contact our office today if you have any questions about you oral health.
