Scaling and root planing are used on patients that have gum disease to prevent harmful bacteria from destroying the bone and tissue that surrounds their teeth. Scaling is the process of removing plaque and tartar from underneath the gum line, while root planing removes some of the surface of the tooth to make it smoother.
Whether you are edentulous or have all of your natural teeth, gum disease can be spotted from the early stages, and there are some warning signs which can indicate that you are at risk. Red and swollen gums are a good indication of gums which are at risk of gum disease. If your gums become swollen and red throughout the day, it may be an early sign of gum disease.
