What to Do if Your Dentist Suggests You May Have Gum Disease

Posted on 2/10/2018 by Front Desk
Gum Disease The Mugford Center MD 21114If you recently went to your dentist and he or she said you may be showing the early signs of gum disease, your next step is very important.

You could let your dentist wait and see if the signs progress, or you could come in and let us start the earliest phases of gum disease treatment. By treating gum disease at its earliest point, it requires less treatment, and the treatment is usually able to be more complete.

Don't Wait to Get Gum Disease Treatment

It is really important that you take the time to get gum disease treatment as early as possible. The earlier you are able to come in and get it treated, the less involved that treatment is likely to be.

When you catch gum disease when it is in its earliest stages, the treatment is able to be completed in just a few sessions. The longer the disease goes on, the amount of treatment sessions goes up.

Typically, with early stage gum disease, the only treatment necessary is what we consider a very deep cleaning of your teeth. It is called scaling and root planing.

We go in and scrape off any tartar and plaque you may have against your teeth that occurred below the gum line. This helps the gums stay firmly attached to the roots of your teeth, and keeps your teeth more protected in the long run.

Some dentists want to wait to see if the early signs they see do actually progress into gum disease. We don't recommend waiting.

It is best to begin treatment as early as possible so that you can get the best results when all is said and done. Call our office today, and schedule a consultation so we can determine the overall health of your gums.
