How Implants Can Benefit Your Oral Health

Dental implants are one of the most popular options for replacing missing teeth. They consist of small, titanium rods, which are surgically placed into your jawbone. The implants then support ceramic crowns. Implants offer numerous benefits, many of which are beneficial to your oral health.

Natural Teeth Stay Healthy

Traditionally, when you are missing a tooth or two, the solution was s dental bridge. In order for the bridge to be placed, the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap need to be reduced in size. This allows the crowns of the bridge to anchor onto these teeth, providing a secure fit. With implants, the crown is attached to an abutment on the titanium post, so there is no need to grind down perfectly good teeth.

Preserve Jawbone

Tooth loss causes several changes in your mouth. One of the biggest changes is that your jawbone begins to grow weak. As it does, it changes shape. This not only makes you look older, but it causes your teeth to shift from their original position, causing a misaligned bite. Your teeth may experience uneven wear, or you may be faced with severe jaw pain. While bridges can hold your teeth in place, it cannot stop the bone loss beneath the gums. Implants act like the roots of your teeth, preserving your jawbone, and keeping it strong and healthy.

Reduce the Risk of Gum Disease

Restorations like partial dentures require a lot of maintenance to keep clean. Dental implants can be treated just like your natural teeth. So long as you brush and floss regularly, and visit your dentist at least twice a year, they can help to keep your mouth healthy and reduce your risk for gum disease.
